As part of a voluntary survey, companies are asked about their research and development (R&D) activities on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Core indicators are internal and external R&D expenditures by use of funds and source of financing, R&D personnel by type of activity performed and gender, regional distribution of research sites, innovation activity and key business indicators.
The R&D survey follows international standards of the European Union and the OECD. Accordingly, the data by industry, region or company type are not only nationally but also internationally comparable. They are a central component of Germany’s reporting on technological and innovative performance at home and in the EU and OECD.
